Lumberjack Shirt

Where Did the Lumberjack Shirt Originate?

.

As you probably know, a lumberjack was a man who spent his days cutting down trees! The term “lumberjack” comes from an age prior to 1945 when the men only had hand tools (axes) to cut down the enormous trees in the forests. The image was, and still is, of a masculine, muscle bound hard man who was able to live a life under severe conditions for a small wage.

Now whilst the majority of that image does not really get you rushing out to be one, if you ask anyone they will probably have held onto the big, strapping muscle bound hard man part! Isn’t that right ladies?!

In recent times the name lumberjack has been replaced by the term logger (not quite the same appeal (me thinks!).

The original lumberjack shirt was made of hard wearing plaid flannel due to the fact that the men would wear them for long periods of time (days sometimes!), in cold temperatures and they also got quite dirty. The lumberjack shirts were also long sleeved.

So, up until relatively recently the shirts were purely seen as an item of clothing to keep you warm and also something that would be hard wearing and not rip easily.

But then in 2010 those iconic designers Dolce & Gabbana and Tommy Hilfiger included the lumberjack shirt in its winter catwalk shows catapulting it into the spotlight. Add into the mix the fact that the likes of David Beckham, Christina Aguilera, Kate Moss, Gordon Ramsey, Vanessa Hudgens, Jennifer Aniston and Robert Pattinson (to name but a few) were seen sporting them and you can see why they are now such a fashion must have.

How to make a Lumberjack Shirt Look Good!

  • Wear a shirt underneath
  • Roll the sleeves up
  • Add solid colours as accessories – preferably pick up one of the colours of the shirt.

Today’s modern lumberjack shirts are made of cotton as well as wool. Whats more – they look just as good on a woman as they do on a man.

But remember, the bigger the squares the bigger it will make you look!!
